In the global context, businesses are mainly focused on profit and but still, there are some organizations out there who expect social values in addition to profit. But at the end of the day, the most common goal of a business organization will be how much they earn as a profit and how much they invest in the future of the organization.

To meet their own set of goals, they will strive for different methods of professional approach according to market to satisfy their customer needs. What will be the most efficient and effective way to address the changes on the market and what is the best approach is a question in the corner for a long time.

The one who does not adapt to change will vanish to dust in today’s rapidly changing world. On the organizational level, all hired employees should be aware of the changes that take place in the global business world, and in an organizational context, the human resource department should look ahead and match first to conquer changes work for the organization.

Simply profit

Nowadays, business leaders will follow the simplest ways like increasing production, services, or increasing their prices, to earn more profit and also willing to apply strategic applications in other hands. By choosing the easiest path to increase profit may incure a long time negative impact on the organization as customers may turn away.

The change

But if we can achieve more profit by changing organizational structure and strategic approach, it may not affect the customers or their loyalty towards the organization, and it will generate long time more stable way of generating profit.

Therefore, many organizations are now willing to hire people to the organization structure from different backgrounds, nationalities, following different faiths, or representing different cultures as a strategic approach.

So, what is this concept of diversity in the workplace? If an organization hires people based on nationality, faith, gender, age, or different academic qualifications (Tenas, 2012), we can call it a diverse hired workplace.

Then the organization should manage this diverse human resource to greater effect according to human resource management principles to achieve their prime goal.

Global business groups like Disney and Virgin are adopting this methodology to their operations already (Reynolds, 2018).

How does this diverse culture in the workplace affect?

Diversity will,

On Productivity

On Efficiency

On Profit

Create space for innovation and new strategic approaches (Patrick & Kumar, 2012).

In other words, it is an open door to attract new investors and customers and earn more market share to the progress of the business.

Also, management should be aware that diverse employees may breach organization rules due to nationality, religion, or sexual orientation of their own which results negatively on organization performance.

Sri lankan context

Sri Lanka is one of the most diverse and multi-national and cultural countries in the world by any means and by hiring human resources according to this concept we may be able to achieve significant progress in the tourism, financial, and service sectors. But not only in private firms but we may be able to increase efficiency in the government sector by creating a diverse workplace for employees by making it feel to all Sri Lankans that this is their motherland.

“Diversity matters. In a world that is both diverse and deeply interconnected, companies and institutions with greater levels of diversity are achieving better performance” (Hunt, et al., 2015)

  1. Employees' similarities and variances in terms of age, cultural background, physical abilities and disabilities, color, religion, gender, and sexual orientation are all examples of workforce diversity. There are no two people who are the same. People differ not only in terms of gender, culture, race, socioeconomic status, and psychological traits, but also in terms of their perspectives and prejudices. For millennia, society has discriminated against these characteristics. The workforce is varied due to diversity. Employing a diverse workforce is a requirement for every organisation in the contemporary environment, yet managing such a diverse staff is a major issue for management. After reviewing the literature and various research papers, it was determined that workforce diversity is a strength for any organisation. However, people still hold onto their prejudices about caste, religion, and other factors, and thus perceive diversity as a problem. However, if managed properly, diversity can increase productivity (ScienceDirect, 2014). This is a great article with a lot of important information thank you.

  2. Better decision-making is a result of diversity. Companies benefit the most when upper management and lower management are both racially diverse. Diverse groups consider a wider range of ideas and come up with more options (Turner & Fischhoff 2021).
